About Bishop Coyne

Bishop Coyne

On December 22, 2014,
The Holy Father appointed the
Most Reverend Christopher James Coyne as Bishop of Burlington,
in Vermont.

Immediately prior to this appointment,
Bishop Coyne served the Church
as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
He was ordained a priest in 1986, a bishop in 2011,
and is a former Professor of Sacred Liturgy and Preaching
at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, MA.
He received his doctorate from the Pontifical Institute of Liturgy
at St. Anselmo in Rome.
He is also a former director of the Office for Worship
for the Archdiocese of Boston, and later
media spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary for Communications
of the Archdiocese of Boston.
He was the pastor of St. Margaret Mary Parish
in Westwood MA from May of 2006 to March 2011.

On September 21, 2011,
Pope Benedict XVI accepted the early retirement
of Indianapolis Archbishop Buechlein,
and named Bishop Coyne
the Apostolic Administrator of the archdiocese.
He served in that role until December 3, 2012,
when Archbishop Joseph W. Tobi
was installed as the sixth archbishop of Indianapolis.
On October 1, 2014, Bishop Coyne assumed pastoral responsibility
for the New Albany, Seymour, and Tell City deaneris
in the southern part of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis,
before his appointment as tenth Bishop of Burlington
on December 22, 2014.

Bishop Coyne was recently elected by the United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops as Chairman of the Committee on Communications. His term will begin in November 2015.
